The Style Edit | Reworking the Maxi Dress

Whenever I hear the word ‘maxi’ I squirm. Through the stereotypes of the ‘maxi dress’ wearer, I’ve come to loathe the floor-sweeping dresses that have dominated the summer scene for the past few years. For this reason I’ve tended to avoid anything ‘maxi’, instead favouring shorter dresses or city-style shorts for the warmer season.

However, having followed Olivia Palermo for a substantial number of years, I’ve seen long dresses and skirts done well. Styled right and a floor-length day dress can look both elegant and not too try-hard. I’ve chosen to wear mine (a £10 bargain from the H&M sale!) with my summer Marks and Spencer espadrilles (post on espadrilles here), with a jumper over my shoulders for when things get a bit cooler! Avoid ‘WAG’ by choosing a dress with no pattern, and pair it down instead of styling it up (note: a chignon always works well if you’re attempting French chic!).
